The Clarion Call: April 2025

It is springtime, and the world is changing. Markets shift, policies change, and our personal priorities adjust and grow --- just like the seasons. With any change, there are opportunities and uncertainties. Staying grounded in a thoughtful plan is more pertinent than ever.
It is important to prepare before the “storm” arrives. Prepare before the hurricane hits the shore, prepare before the flood waters rise, prepare before the wildfire rages. For your financial life, the preparation you do with your portfolio is as important as what you do with your home before the inevitable storm.
This preparation is what we do when we meet together. The way we prepare is with asset allocation and investment selection. Asset allocation is the division of stocks, bonds, cash, commodities and real estate. This blend is the “prep before the storm.” We also select the funds or stocks or whatever before the emergency arises.
From time to time, we receive a call to “rebuild the house and prep for the storm in the middle of the storm.” Some tweaks may be necessary as the “storm” rages, but an entire revamp is not usually a good idea. This is because our minds are so emotional that it makes it hard to make good decisions.
With all the changes happening, perspective continues to be paramount. (I am sharing more charts and graphs than usual, but I think they tell an important story).
First of all, volatility is the movement of the market up and down day by day. When we have several years of low-vol, we forget how it feels for the markets to move up or down more than 2% in a day. Large swings are more common than we remember.

Volatility has been below average for the last several years. An uptick in volatility is to be expected.
For investors, many believe that the holy grail would be to avoid the down days and only invest on the up days. Unfortunately, the big down days are often very close to the big UP days.

It is easy to miss those big up days if you become afraid and exit the market.
Just like spring follows winter, winter is important to the process of rejuvenation and growth.

We never know for sure what will happen in the world of investing. But we do study market history and we know the world goes through extreme changes from time to time.
As your advisor, our objective is to grow and protect the assets you have so dutifully saved over your lifetime. We spend our time thinking and working to achieve this objective.
We will continue to monitor the markets and make adjustments to protect and grow your portfolio. Thank you for putting your trust in us.
